To date his greatest success has been taking Alexander Abt from a hopeful 11-year-old Moscow boy to becoming the 2003 Russian National Champion. Arutunian also coached Anton Klykov to the 2002 Junior World Championship who went on to win the gold in the 2003 World Championships, and he also coached Jennifer Mac Cocel to the British National Championship.



"I love my work here at the Ice Castle," Arutunian says, "and I hope to someday become a citizen of the United States. I have been to many places around the world as a coach and as a competitor and I have never felt more at home than I do here in Lake Arrowhead." Arutunian says living in the mountains is "very special and I plan to make this my home."

Describing why he came to the Ice Castle International Training Center, Arutunian said the facility has everything necessary to develop a skater to their fullest potential.

"The Ice Castle Training Center is known all over the world. I think that the Ice Castle is unique in that it is a high altitude training center. There are very few distractions here and for this reason, the most serious competitors come here to train prior to a major competition," Arutunian emphasized.

Asked about the difference between coaching in the United States and Russia Arutunian reflected, "In Russia, there exists many old standing sporting federations. As a coach, you must be a member of a club and you work for a basic salary. Regardless of your achievements, your role in the club remains the same, upward mobility is slow."

He continued, "There is still the same personal reward in making each individual skater the best that they can become, but in America, there is great opportunity. You can build and develop your own business. And although you must always take risks, your knowledge and hard work is rewarded."

Arutunian says the difference between the training of Russian and American skaters is that in Russia skaters are supported by the government, and when a group of promising young skaters are selected for national programs, they are immediately given instruction in all aspects of the sport including off-ice jumping, dance, ballet, choreography and personal one-on-one training.

"In United States there is no financial support from the government or skating federations until a skater has medalled in a national competition. Here in the United States it is the parents who bare the financial burden of training their children."

Arutunian says it is hard to compete with nationally supported training programs, which is why some of the most talented female skaters continue to come from countries like Russia and Japan. "As a competitive coach, I do all that I can to make certain that my students have a complete balanced training program, so they are prepared to compete with the best."

THE PROFILE

"I look for young skaters that are able to set goals and consistently move forward with a plan to achieve those goals," Arutunian says.

"Over a period of time, I look for the students who have a competitive spirit and strive to be the best. If they are driven to be the best, they will begin to win in their competitions."

Arutunian says it is important skaters begin at an early age. Young skaters develop strong muscle memory and good skating discipline when they begin skating at 4 or 5 years of age.

"I have already taken students to national and world championships; that was my first goal and I have already achieved that goal. Now, I would like to focus on the development of a few quality American skaters. I know that I have the experience and dedication to develop one or two young skaters to this highest level of world champion. I will be fulfilled as a coach if I can accomplish this goal, here in Lake Arrowhead!"

Arutunian says he is living the American dream. He loves his work and he also enjoys the outdoors and fishing in our local lakes. He also looks forward to weekend visits to the ocean. His wife coaches figure skaters in Moscow and plans to join Rafael here in Lake Arrowhead as soon as she is certain that all plans with their children's education are in order. His 17-year-old son is an accomplished pianist and his daughter is pursuing a successful career in the field of art in Russia.

Visitors are welcome at the Ice Castle International Training Center. Skate Schools are conducted on Tuesday from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Recreation sessions are held on Tuesday and Friday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. Sundays are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Recreation sessions are reasonably priced at $7 per session plus a $1.50 skate rental fee. 競技会を控えた極めて真剣な選手が、ここへ練習に訪れるんだよ。」と、Arutunian は力説しました。

合衆国とロシアでのコーチをする上での違いについて尋ねたところ、「ロシアには、古くからのスポーツ連盟が

多く存在するんだ。コーチはクラブのメンバーである必要があり、基本的なサラリーで働くことになる。そして、

成果ににかかわらず、クラブでの職位は変わらないんだよ。だから、上昇志向は弱いんだ。」と、Arutunian は

ロシアとアメリカのスケート選手との間のトレーニングの違いについて、 Arutunian は、ロシアのスケーターは

「対抗意識のあるコーチとして、僕の教え子達が完全にバランスのとれたトレーニング・プログラムによって、彼らが

ベストな状態で競技に望めるように、僕はできる限りのことをしているんだ。」

と Arutunian は語りました。

Arutunian よれば、幼いころからスケートを始めることが大切であるとのこと。 ４、５歳の頃からスケートを始めれば、

強固なマッスル・メモリーと望ましいスケート規律を養えるからである。

「僕はこれまでに、教え子達を国内及び世界チャンピオンへと導いてきたんだ。それは僕の最初の目標であったし、

既に成し遂げることができたんだよ。これからは、優れた才能を有したアメリカ人のスケーターの育成に、力を入れて

取り組んでいきたいんだ。若いスケート選手の一人や二人を、世界チャンピオンという最高のレベルへと育て上げる

ために必要な知識と情熱を、僕は持ち合わせているつもりだ。 もし、ここ Lake Arrowhead で、その目標を成し遂げる

ことができたならば、コーチとして、僕は達成感を感じることができるだろうさ。」

アメリカンドリームを実現しているんだ、と Arutunian は語っています。彼は、自分の仕事が気に入っており、近くの

湖でのアウトドアやフィッシングもまた楽しんでいます。また、海での週末の滞在も楽しみにしています。

彼の妻は、モスクワでフィギュアスケートのコーチをしており、子供達の教育プランが整い次第、ここ Lake Arrowhead

で Rafael と一緒に暮らす予定です。 17歳になる息子は優れたピアニストであり、娘はロシアで芸術の分野での成功

を目指して、頑張っています。
