Lake Arrowhead resident Carol Probst, who had skated with the Ice Follies, was approached by the Blue Jay Village Company to build a bigger and better rink, a unique structure open on three sides. It would be the only rink in the country designed to let in fresh air and sunshine. It was called the Ice Castle, a large ice skating rink that opened in 1983.

On Feb. 14, 2001, after three days of snowfall, the entire roof collapsed due to the weight of the snow.

But that was not the end of the Ice Castle. Probst had opened a training center on Burnt Mill Road in 1988. It included what is now Arrowhead Ranch and offered cabins where skaters could stay. Michelle Kwan and Russian skater Alexander Abt both took up residence there.

About five years ago Probst decided to spend more time with her family and put the Ice Castle International Training Center up for sale. Skaters continued to train at the center while she waited for the right buyer to come along.

She did not have to look far. Anthony Liu, a seven-time Australian national champion, was training at the Ice Castle. He and Larry Brunn, whose two daughters were skating at the center, became friends and talked about the possibility of buying the center.

Three years ago Liu and Brunn made that dream a reality. Liu is now the owner and Brunn is the vice president and general manager.

Brunn is quick to sing the praises of Carol Probst. “She is the patron saint of skating,” he said. “Keep in mind she opened this center during the Cold War. Her dream was to bring all international skaters together and she accomplished that dream.

“On any given day,” Brunn continued, “you can sit here and hear seven different languages being spoken. There are skaters out on the ice right now from the U.S., Russia, Korea and Norway.”

TRAINING CENTER

The training center run by Liu and Brunn is the same building in the same location as the one started by Probst. And a training center is what it is. Athletes come from all over the world to train with the elite coaches who make up the staff.

The coaches, Brunn explained, are independent contractors. The center supplies the ice and the facilities; each coach works for him or herself. Skaters contact them to check on availability of training time and make arrangements directly with the coaches.

Of the 100 to 150 students at the Ice Castle, about 75 percent are local residents. They start out in beginning classes, taught by Jennifer Castle and Katrina Shi. In their lessons they learn basic skills, the elements they will need as they progress: spins, edges, smaller jumps.

From beginners the students move to intermediate classes and then on to individual lessons. Meanwhile, Castle is watching out for students with exceptional potential. Those students become part of her Future Champions program, where they learn more complicated spins and multiple jumps. They start to work with the elite coaches and begin competing in local competitions.

“We now have our own United States Figure Skating Association club?the Lake Arrowhead Figure Skating Club?so we can host one competition a year,” Brunn said.

The coaches at the Ice Castle are stars in their own right and have the expertise to train today’s up-and-coming stars.

Rafael Arutyunyan, who is a past Soviet national competitor, has coached many national and world-class skaters, including five-time world champion Michelle Kwan and Olympic bronze medalist Jeffrey Buttle. Currently Arutyunyan is coaching Mao Asada, the Japanese figure skating sensation who just took silver at the Grand Prix of Figure Skating in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Doug Murray, a U.S. Figure Skating Association triple gold medalist and international ice dancer competitor, has been coaching for 17 years at the Ice Castle. He uses both his ice dance and freestyle experience to help improve skaters’ jump technique, artistry, footwork, edge, quality and power.

Igor Samohin, who was the junior national USSR pairs bronze medalist, has also won or placed in numerous Russian and international pairs events. He received his master’s degree from the Academy of Sport in Moscow and served as the national Olympic coach of Israel in 1998 and as the coach of the 2003 U.S. junior national team. He coaches all aspects of singles and pairs.

Mountain resident Jennifer Castle, a USFSA gold medalist, began her skating career at the original ice rink in Blue Jay. She has the distinction of being the first Ice Castle USFSA gold medalist. She enjoys all aspects of skating, from judging to management and coaching.

Nadia Kanaeva was a Russian national team member for six years at the novice and junior levels. She is a Russia Cup senior gold medalist, a junior Olympics gold medalist and a junior World bronze medalist. She apprenticed as a coach under Elena Vodorezova and Rafael Arutyunyan and has developed a wide repertory of coaching skills, including jumps, spins, footwork and choreography.

Andrey Bushkov has a master’s degree in physical education from the St. Petersburg State Academy and uses this background to prepare his students for competitive skating. With his partner Marina Eltsova, Bushkov is a six-time Russian national champion, a two-time European champion and a World pairs champion. He also represented Russia at the 1998 Olympics. He has taught both national and international competitors, including Italian junior national champion Federicka Constantini and American junior pairs team Lindsey and Andy Seitz. He joined the Ice Castle coaching staff in 2005.

Anthony Liu, in addition to being the seven-time Australian national champion, also competed in six World championships and two Olympics. He was the first skater to land a quad-triple combination in competition for Australia. He coaches all levels of freestyle and jumps, power skating and speed.

Katrina Shi won the Chinese junior national championship at the age of 13. She earned her bachelor’s degree in sports science and uses that education in her coaching.

CURRENT AND FUTURE CHAMPIONS

To look at 16-year-old Mao Asada, Brunn said, you would just see a sweet girl buying groceries at the local market. In fact she is the reigning ladies’ figure skating world champion. “She hasn’t gotten back yet from St. Petersburg,” Brunn said. That’s where Asada competed in the Grand Prix figure skating championship and will bring the silver medal back to Lake Arrowhead.

“Mao is the only girl doing a triple axel in competition right now,” Brunn said. “She’s a real risk taker.”

Asada trains at the Ice Castle with Arutyunyan, as does her sister Mai. They are not alone in leaving home to pursue their dreams.

Russian Vadim Akolzin and American Hayley Sacks make up a pairs figure skating team who will compete for Israel. They are training at the Ice Castle with Bushkov.

Watching them practice their lifts on land was breathtaking. Bushkov was beside them every inch of the way, watching Akolzin’s holds and Sacks’ arm and leg extensions.

When they took to the ice, they glided side by side, practicing their spins and jumps. Bushkov watched them closely, offering comments and occasionally demonstrating what he meant either alone or with one of the skaters.

“Alexy has all the patience in the world,” Brunn said. “He’s a great coach.”

Bushkov is grooming the pair for next year’s Grand Prix competitions, the European championship and the World championship. Their big goal: Vancouver in 2010.

The Keiser family from Pittsburgh divides their time between their home there and Lake Arrowhead. “We first came out here,” Betty Keiser explained, “because my older daughter Leah just loved Michelle Kwan. She wanted to skate on the same ice.”

That first trip led to one-week stays once a year four years ago and eventually to the Keisers renting a house and coming out for two to three weeks a month all year long. The two girls?Leah and Emily?train with Liu. Leah also does some training with Arutyunyan.

Why travel so far? “This is a unique rink,” Betty said. “The coaches are very nice. The girls just love it.” The girls, who also have coaches in Pittsburgh, have been attending regular school but will start cyber school this month.

CHANGES IN THE SPORT

When Peggy Fleming was on top of the podium, single jumps were the order of the day. Twenty years later, Brunn said, it’s all about triple axels and triple combinations.

The new scoring system is now in place. Each jump, Brunn explained, is assigned a level of difficulty which is influenced by where the jump comes in the program. Spins and footwork are also assigned levels of difficulty. Skaters accumulate points throughout their programs.

Brunn agreed that skaters have had to redo their programs to take full advantage of the new system.

These skills don’t come easily or cheaply. Skaters must practice each move over and over again, every day, in order to gain consistency in their jumping.

In addition to coaching fees, costume costs and travel expenses, skaters have to buy the most important elements: their skates. The blades typically cost $500 a pair, as do the competitive boots. It’s not unusual for a skater to need two pairs a year.

Brunn has been at the Ice Castle for over 12 years. He recalled an evening when he saw Michelle Kwan, Anthony Liu and Sasha Cohen all doing their programs out on the ice.

“It was magical,” he said. “Sasha didn’t train up here, but she would come up all the time to see what her competition was doing.”

For the moment, Brunn was neither a vice president nor a general manager. He was a proud dad, watching his daughters Sara and Jenni glide across the ice.

しかし、それは Ice Castle の終わりではなかったのです。

Probst は、1988年にBurnt Mill Road 沿いに、現在 Arrowhead Ranch と呼ばれ、スケーターが滞在できるキャビンを提供している施設を含むトレーニングセンターをオープンしていたのです。

３年前、Liu と Brunn はその夢を現実にしました。 現在、Liu はオーナーであり、Brunn は副社長で統括マネジャーとなっています。

TRAINING CENTER

Liu と Brunn が運営するトレーニングセンターは、Probst によって始められたものと同じ場所で、同じ建物です。そして、そのトレーニングセンターには、スタッフである一流のコーチに付いてトレーニングをするために、世界各地からアスリートがやって来るのです。

Brunn によると、コーチは請負人（請負契約によって、仕事を完成する義務を負う人）であって、センターはスケートリンク及び施設を提供し、各々のコーチは自分たちのために働くのであるとのことです。 スケーターたちは、空いているトレーニング・タイムを確認するためにコーチに連絡を取り、直接に彼らと段取りを決めているのです。

100人から 150人に及ぶ Ice Castle の生徒のうち、約 75パーセントは地元の住人です。彼らは、Jennifer Castle と Katrina Shi が指導する初心者クラスから始めます。

そのレッスンでは基本的な技術と、上達するにつれて必要とされるエレメンツである、スピン、エッジ・ワーク、小さなジャンプを習います。

現在、Arutyunyan は、ロシアのサンクトペテルブルグで開催されたグランプリ・ファイナルで銀メダルを獲得した日本のフィギュアスケートのセンセーション、浅田真央を指導しています。

全米選手権で３度の金メダルに輝き、国際的なアイス・ダンスの競技者である Doug Murray は、Ice Castle で 17年に及んでコーチをしてきました。彼はアイスダンスとフリースタイルでの経験を生かして、選手のジャンプ技術、芸術性、フットワーク、エッジ、演技の質、そして体力の上達

を手助けしています。

イスラエル代表として戦うことになる、ペアのフィギュアスケート・チームを組んだロシアの Vadim Akolzin と Hayley Sack は、Bushkov と共に Ice Castle でトレーニングをしています。

地面でリフトの練習をする彼らを見るだけで驚くほどでした。Bushkov は彼らの側でAkolzin のホールド及び Sacks の腕と脚の伸展のあらゆる動きを注意して見ていました。

氷上では、彼らは並んで滑り、スピンやジャンプの練習をしていました。Bushkov は彼らをじっと観察して意見を述べたり、時には単独あるいはペアの一人を伴って、自分が意図することが何であるかを実演していました。

「 Alexy (Andrey) は、この世のすべての忍耐を持ち合わせているようだね。偉大なコーチだよ。」と、Brunn は語りました。

Bushkov は来期のグランプリシリーズ、ヨーロッパ選手権及び世界選手権に向けて、このペアを育て上げています。彼らの大きな目標は、2010年のバンクーバーなのです。

ピッツバーグからの Keiser 家の人々は、自宅と Lake Arrowhead とで自分たちの時間を振り分けています。「最初にここにやって来たのは、長女の Leah がとても Michelle Kwan のことが大好きだったからなの。同じリンクでスケートをしたがったのよ。」と、Betty Keiser は明かしました。

CHANGES IN THE SPORT （スポーツの移り変り）

Peggy Fleming が表彰台のトップにいたときは、単独のジャンプが時の流行 (はやり) でした。20年後、トリプルアクセルと３回転のコンビネーションがすべてである、とBrunn は言います。

新しい採点システムは、今すべて準備が整っています。 Brunn によれば、すべてのジャンプには難易度が割り当てられ、ジャンプがプログラムのどこで来るのかも考慮されているとのことです。スピンやフットワークにもまた難易度が割り当てられ、選手はプログラム全体を通してポイントを積み重ねていくのです。

選手が新しいシステムを最大限に活かせるようにプログラムを作り直す事について、Brunn は賛同していました。

こうした技術を身に付けるのは、容易でなければ安くもないのです。ジャンプを常に同じように跳べるようになるため、スケーターは同じ動作を日々何度も繰り返して練習する必要があるのです。

コーチの授業料、衣装費用と旅費に加えて、スケーターは最も重要で必要不可欠な物であるスケート靴を買わなければいけません。競技ブーツ同様、ブレードも通常一対で 500ドルかかり、スケーターが年に２足必要とすることも珍しいことではないのです。

Ice Castle にやって来て12年以上が経つ Brunn は、Michelle Kwan、Anthony Liu、 そして Sasha Cohen の一同が、リンクで各々のプログラムを練習をする光景を目にした晩のことを思い起こしました。

「それは夢のようだったね。 Sasha はここでトレーニングをしていなかったんだが、自分の競争相手が何をしているかを見るため、いつも来ていたんだよ。」と、彼は語りました。

現在のところ、Brunn は副社長でも統括マネジャーでもありません。彼は、娘の Sara とJenni が氷上で滑るのを見守っている、得意げなお父さんなのでした。
